As far back as Kevin can remember, he loved building and repairing things. Bird houses, model cars, bicycles, the playhouse for his two younger sisters. He remembers how they couldn’t wait to move their toys inside and invite their friends over. Kevin loved creating things that made a difference in other people’s lives. It was a good feeling to make his sisters so happy.

As he got older, furniture building in grade ten became carpentry in grade 12. He lived and breathed building things. It’s no surprise that as an adult, Kevin started his own firm, Cornerstone Construction.
He had a great staff of nine people, including office personnel. He diligently hired the right people, knowing it was hard to get good staff.
Business was booming. He was living the dream!
Until he wasn’t.
Two years into her role as Kevin’s Office Manager, Jodie sustained an awful mountain biking accident near her friend’s cabin. Along with bruises and scrapes, she was told she required registered massage therapy (RMT) and chiropractic sessions for her injuries. Jodie would have to miss 8-10 weeks of work.
Not only did Kevin empathize with Jodie about her injuries, he now had to take time away from his on-site project management to do administration work in the office.
Unfortunately, Jodie, being a young single mom, had no extra money for RMT or chiropractic treatments. Shortly after, she had to quit her job and move out of town to live with her sister.
Kevin lost a good….no…a great employee. He was devastated.
He now found himself in the position of having to look for another Office Manager. He had no time to respond to quotation requests. How could he continue if he lost staff to health-related problems?
Then a friend told him about something called a Health Spending Account (HSA) for small business owners. He could use funds from Cornerstone Construction to pay for medical expenses for his employees without breaking the bank. Shortly after, he opened an HAS with CustomCare.
Kevin now provides a healthcare package for his staff that allows him to focus on growing his business and while ensuring staff retention.

He couldn't help Jodie, but he was glad that going forward, he wouldn't experience the stress of losing an employee because they could not afford a treatment.

He also has the peace of mind that his staff has access to healthcare dollars and benefits as needed.
That is why it is important for small business owners such as Cornerstone to provide benefits that are attractive to their staff, but also affordable to Kevin as an employer.
